Will Rogers, who was promoted from "Rope Thrower" to "American Humorist" by Woodrow Wilson himself, once said...
'Well, the election will be breaking out pretty soon, and a flock of Democrats will replace a mess of Republicans in quite a few districts. It won't mean a thing. They will go in like all the rest of them, go in on promises and come out on alibis.'--Will Rogers

I got nothing to say about Trump. But Will did.
'All there is to politics is trading. That's why politics is not as good as it was years ago. They don't have as many old-time horse traders in there. These we got are just amateurs. They're crude with their trades. There really is no finesse.'--Will Rogers

'Ain't it funny how many thousands of soldiers we can recruit with nerve. But we just can't find one politician in a million with backbone.'--Will Rogers
And don't go pointing to anyone but, perhaps, Rand Paul as proof otherwise. Belligerence and trash talk from behind the Secret Service is not backbone. Refusing to flip flop is backbone.

I wonder if he missed just being a rope thrower? Didn't need to, at first. He threw ropes on the vaudeville circuit, and he was good. Florence Ziegfeld decided it was worth a try to put him on his stage, that sort of thing being somewhat unusual in Manhattan. One day he was jumping in and out of the loop as he twirled it, and screwed up. He said, 'Well that wasn't too bad. Got all my feet through but one.' Now, the Follies was a good paying gig, and it drew some talent. At that time, the other guys who entertained people between the numbers by the underdressed dancing girls included Eddie Cantor and W.C. Fields. He may have been worried that the novelty of his rope throwing would wear off with that audience, and he would be out in the cold. But when they laughed at his 'Got all my feet through but one', he decided he might be able to multitask. So, he read the paper every morning, and joked about the stuff he saw there while he did his rope tricks. And what part of the paper is goofier than the political page? It was all improv. And the novelty of it didn't wear off. There he was working with Eddie Cantor and W.C. Fields, and he had emerged as the big star of the group. 'You know the more you read and observe about this politics thing, you got to admit that each party is worse than the other. The one that's out always looks the best.'-- Will Rogers

'Democrats are attacking and the Republicans are defending. All the Democrats have to do is promise "what they would do if they got in." But the Republicans have to promise "what they would do" and then explain why they haven't already done it.'--Will Rogers
This year, with one party in control of Congress and the other in the White House, we should be making them both explain why they haven't already done it. Instead, they have us so distracted by clowns we can't hold them responsible for anything.

.'With every public man we have elected doing comedy, I tell you I don't see much of a chance for a comedian to make a living. I am just on the verge of going to work. They can do more funny things naturally than I can think of to do purposely.'--Will Rogers

'We shouldn't elect a president. We should elect a magician.'--Will Rogers
Seems to me we insist on electing someone who claims to be a magician, even though we know damned well he isn't. Then we wonder how we wound up with a lying psycho.

And Clinton had to look awfully hard to find someone people wanted to vote against even more than her.
