"He was with a group of men discussing the Japan-China situation. Some one said that after all, all Japan wanted was a Monroe Doctrine over China. 'Doctrine?' Dad said quick as a flash. 'That's not doctorin', that's operatin'!'"--Will Rogers, Jr.

"Well, the train was right on us when the Chinese started shelling the town and saying, 'We are Missionaries come to America, and you will have to worship Buddha and go to the Mission schools and learn Chinese.' Then the Nicaraguans started dropping aeroplane bombs on us. We had nothing to do but let them drop. They said they wanted to protect the United States as they wanted to put a canal through here some time."--Will Rogers

'We, unfortunately, don't make a good impression collectively. You see a bunch of Americans at anything abroad and they generally make more noise and have more to say than anybody, and generally create a worse impression than if they had stayed at home.

'I don't care how poor and inefficient a little country is. They like to run their own business. Sure, America and England can run countries perhaps better than China, Korea or India, but that don't mean they ought to. I know men that would make my wife a better husband than I am, but darn it, I'm not going to give her to 'em.'--Will Rogers
