Donald Trump is determined to drive a stake through the heart of conservatism.
In its stead, Trump offers up a new, patriotic, xenophobic brand of ostensibly anti-internationalist socialism. It has nothing to do with the bedrock principle that prosperity is best produced by a free people enjoying the blessings of peace. It is, in fact, as totalitarian and centrally planned as any more ostensibly liberal brand of socialism; downright Nazi in fact. Conservative it is not.
Xenophobia is being served up as a conservatism substitute--a pablum for fools. And the pot is being continually stirred to keep Americans divided and conquered, and talking about anything but anything except how much the Obama socialism that just destroyed our economy and the new Trumpian fascism truly resemble each other.
And so George W. Bush's fifth term begins. And conservatism--a proven political philosophy--dies a slow death, having lost its identity and its name, a good name applied to something reprehensible in an attempt to kill it. Lock up all the world's chocolate and call brussels sprouts 'chocolate' long enough, and the day will come when no one wants anything to do with it. Set the richest chocolate in front of a child and call it what it is, and the child will run away.
Conservatism is now committed to conserving socialist totalitarianism. The time has come for those who wish to restore those things to America which made it great to embrace a new label. It's wiser to switch than fight.

But what term can we use that is easy to grasp, precise, and has no baggage?

100% correct. But what term can we use that is easy to grasp, precise, and has no baggage? Doesn't matter because as soon as you come up with one it will have baggage. If so, our choice is between saying we are nothing, or saying we are something that can't be understood.

Or we fight tooth and nail to prevent both our opponents and our friends from redefining us.
"No, that's not what we are. Carry your own damn baggage, it ain't mine."
Not an easy task when the enemy has multiple established networks and umpteen gazillion watts of broadcast power to use in libeling and slandering us.

I guess we're stuck with it.

Doesn't matter because as soon as you come up with one it will have baggage. If so, our choice is between saying we are nothing, or saying we are something that can't be understood. Well some people will refuse to understand no matter what. For example regardless of what word you put before your "ism" the liberals will still hear "Letthemdieinthestreetsism".

But for some on the left and many in the center, something or another will work. Plus those who lie about our beliefs can be shamed in front of the rest because they will be demonstrated to be lying.

And now we have Antifa showing up at conservative rallies and turning them into riots, and the media saying the conservatives showed up to riot and the counterprotestors didn't start anything. And they keep doubling down. Trump is lambasted for a week and a half (so far) for having the audacity to not actually say Antifa threw the first punch, but merely pointing out that it took two to tango.
And this morning comes the tripling down. The message this morning is, if you show up at a rally and there are white supremacists there, you are in the presence of evil and you are dead wrong if you don't leave immediately. That's convenient. Hold a conservative rally, and all anyone has to do to shut it down completely is to send one person there with a Klan sign or a Nazi flag. Wham. No matter how far you came to be there, no matter what you're promoting, no matter how just your cause, you have to go home immediately. And if you don't, Antifa has the right to put you in the hospital, and the media will say you started it.
But this isn't an attack on free speech. This isn't removing the right to peaceably assemble to anyone the media doesn't approve of, if one plant in a white hood can be posed in front of the cameras and used as a pass for heads to be cracked. Antifa isn't an official, sanctioned, organized attack on free speech even if they work in complete concert with local authorities, and the media denies they threw the first punches.
Why is no one laughing at this joke?

Why is no one laughing at this joke? I don't know. The ability of 'my fellow Americans' to be completely bamboozled, hoodwinked and led around by the nose like cattle by the media has even this jaded old cat astounded right now.

Love Fest in Boston: Trump Shows Support for ANTIFA Shutting Down Free Speech Rally I am sure this is just another case of 400DD inter-galactical chess. Before we delve into today's alt-right embarrassment in Boston, it's important to note that Trump's White House is, quite literally, staffed with Democrats -- people who would be comfortable in a Clinton White House. He has Mnuchin, Cohn and Powell leading the charge, all democrats. His daughter and son in law, Jared, also democrats. The generals really don't give a shit about politics. And then you have AG Sessions who Trump regularly demeans in public. Today, the weak alt-right formed a rally to express 'free speech.' Little did they know, free speech is limited to those who can rally the most people. Since the alt-right are a fringe group with zero coordination, they were quickly dispatched and humiliated today. Have a look. A handful of petrified alt-right activists showed up to Boston today. ibankcoin.com/flyblog/files/2017/08/mob.jpgAnd here is a pastiche of pictures from today's momentus event. America will not tolerate speech that is hateful. www.zerohedge.com/news/2017-08-19/love-fest-boston-trump-shows-support-antifa-shutting-down-free-speech-rallyTrump is a false flag.
