By Tho Bishop - January 15, 2019 Kentucky Senator Rand Paul recently announced he was receiving hernia surgery as a result of being blindsided in an attack from his neighbor. While a senator undergoing common surgery is of questionable newsworthiness, one may expect that the reminder that the Senator is still suffering from the 2017 incident as cause for sympathy. Instead, major media outlets decided to try to use the news as an example of hypocrisy on the part of Paul due to the fact he is receiving treatment at a Canadian hospital. As published in USA Today: Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul, one of the fiercest political critics of socialized medicine, will travel to Canada later this month to get hernia surgery…. He is scheduled to have the outpatient operation at the Shouldice Hernia Hospital in Thornhill, Ontario during the week of Jan. 21, according to documents from Paul’s civil lawsuit against Boucher filed in Warren Circuit Court…. Paul, a Republican, often argues for private market solutions to American’s health care woes. In Canada, medical care is publicly funded and universally provided through the country’s Provincial Ministry of Health, and everyone receives the same level of care. Paul has called universal health care and nationalized options “slavery.” Of course, if the author had decided to do a two second internet search for “Shouldice Hernia Hospital,” they would have found that it is one of few private hospitals that were grandfathered in prior to the government’s takeover of Canadian healthcare. Had three hernia repairs done there and I would highly recommend them.
Their surgeons do more hernia surgeries in one week than most other surgeons do in their lifetime.
They don't use any mesh in their repairs and that is a plus. Often a mesh repair fails and it's difficult to remove the old mesh that has grown into the flesh, so a repair can be made.
I believe doing a repair any other way than how it's done at Shouldice Hospital is just a sign of being a lazy surgeon who hasn't bothered to take the time to learn how to do it correctly.

My mother had that mesh done, twice. With her female parts. Now her guts just want to fall out and she's screwed.

I was warned about that mesh back around 15 years ago when I was getting my surgery. My brother decided not to worry about it and I hope it doesn't cause him any problems.
It was funny though... when I asked him about getting that laparoscopic surgery he said he had asked his surgeon about going to Shouldice Hospital, and his surgeon laughed and said, "I don't know why that place is even around anymore."
I have to wonder why my brother would have fallen for that guys BS when of course his surgeon wanted to do the job. Does he actually think that guy would have been honest and said, 'Why of course, you should have it done as Shouldice Hospital.'
