In 1927 Will Rogers had gallbladder trouble.
'Now the Gall goes into this little pocket and remains there until needed--that is, until you get sore at somebody and want to use it up on them. That's why it is that good natured people are the ones that have the Gall operations; they never use it up on anybody.'--Will Rogers
He told the story in Putnam's, and it was later reprinted as a book called Ether and Me. For some reason or another, Putnam's edited this part out:
'This is a serial in two parts. You may be one of those who don't like continued stories... I had tried to crowd all this cause and effect of this operation into one Article, or installment. Then I got to thinking about the bill--it hadent come yet. But I knew my literary efforts were not appreciated enough by hard-hearted Editors to have one installment pay for a modern, up-to-date, with all the latest improvements operation.'--Will Rogers

'It was at a little Fourth of July celebration at Claremore on july Fourth, 1899, they had a steer roping, and I went into it. It was the first one I ever was in; the very first thing I ever did in the way if appearing before an audience in my life.
'Well, as I look back on it now, I know that that had quite an influence in my little career, for I kinder got to running around to 'em, and the first thing I knew I was just plum "Hornery" and fit for nothing but show business. Once you are a showman you are plum ruined for manual labor again.'--Will Rogers
'I'm awful worried about Will. It just looks like he has a yen for this show business.'--Clem Rogers

'Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences? You see, everything that gives pleasure and makes money is not an 'Art' or a 'Science'. If it were, bootlegging would have been the highest form of artistic endeavor.'--Will Rogers

'Indians and primitive races were the highest civilized, because they were more satisfied, and they depended less on each other, and took less from each other. We couldn't live a day without depending on everybody. So our civilization has given us no liberty or independence.'--Will Rogers

"Young people, they are no better or worse than the rest of us. We are always drilling into them, 'When I was a boy we didn't do that,' but we forget that we are not doing those same old things today. We changed with the times, so we can't blame the children for just joining the times without even having to change.
"We are always telling them what we used to not do. We didn't do it because we didn't think of it. We did everything we could think of."--Will Rogers

'About the only thing an actor can start is a fad, or a divorce.'--Will Rogers
Which is a good thing--unless the actor starts a political fad. Or a divorce from reason.
