Weapons have not been dealt with in large part because the U.S. government didn't want the public to know these chemical weapons were provided to Iraq by the United States and the West in the 1980's
Washington D.C.- A blockbuster story has been broken by the New York Times detailing thousands of chemical weapons in Iraq that have fallen or are in danger of falling into the hands of ISIS fighters.
The most amazing part of the story, these are weapons that pre-date even the Gulf War in 1991 but were largely kept secret by the U.S. government after start of the Iraq War.
These stockpiles of hold chemical weapons are located throughout Iraq including in the Muthanna State Establishment, the center of Iraqi chemical agent production in the 1980′s. Since June, that compound has been held by the Islamic State.
According to the Times, “In a letter sent to the United Nations this summer, the Iraqi government said that about 2,500 corroded chemical rockets remained on the grounds, and that Iraqi officials had witnessed intruders looting equipment before militants shut down the surveillance cameras.”
So what exactly are we talking about in terms of weapons? 155 millimeter artillery shells or 122-millimeter rockets. These are remnants of an arms program dating back to the early 1980s during the Iraq-Iran War.
So the big question is, why didn’t the American public know about these weapons? The answer… during the Iraq War the Bush Administration insisted that we were stopping Saddam Hussein from using stockpiles of weapons of mass destruction. Those weapons were never found but these weapons were. What the U.S. Government did not was revealed is that Hussein received these weapons from the U.S. and the West.
